Every year, on a designated Sunday in June, we take a moment to celebrate the amazing men in our lives: our dads! But why exactly do we have a special day dedicated to dads, and how did this tradition even begin?
In the United States and many other countries, Father’s Day falls on the third Sunday of June. So, for 2024, mark your calendars for June 16th! This date can vary depending on where you live, though. In some European countries, It coincides with Saint Joseph’s Day on March 19th.
The heartwarming story of this lovely day originates from Spokane, Washington. In 1909, a young woman named Sonora Smart Dodd listened to a sermon about the newly established Mother’s Day. Inspired by the tribute to mothers, Sonora, who had been raised by her loving father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran, felt compelled to create a similar day to honor dads.
With unwavering determination, Sonora approached local churches, businesses, and government officials, garnering support for her idea. Her efforts paid off, and the first-ever celebration took place in Spokane on June 19th, 1910. It wasn’t until much later, in 1972, that President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation officially recognizing this day as a national holiday in the United States.
Father’s Day is more than just a day for giving dads cheesy ties (although, some dads might secretly love them!). It’s a day to acknowledge and appreciate the incredible role our dads play in our lives. Dads are our cheerleaders, our protectors, our shoulder to cry on, and our biggest fans.
