Why We Celebrate Mesir Macunu Festival?

Have you ever wondered why people rush to grab sweets falling from the sky at a party? Well, there’s a big celebration in Manisa, Turkey that takes this fun game to a whole new level! This party is all about a special sweet paste called mesir macunu. It’s got a lot of history, tradition, and a dash of sweetness.

Let’s explore why this party is so loved and what happens there every year.

When is the Mesir Macunu Festival Held?

This fun event happens around the time of Nevruz, which is the Persian New Year. This usually falls on March 21st or close to that date. Nevruz is the start of spring, so this party is a way to celebrate both the start of a new season and our cultural traditions.

A Sultan’s Mother and a Healing Paste: How Did the Mesir Macunu Festival Start?

The story behind the festival goes back centuries to a very important woman – Hafsa Sultan, the mother of the powerful Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. One day, Hafsa Sultan got really sick with a strange illness, and none of the royal doctors could figure out what was wrong.

Sultan Suleiman was really worried about his mom, so he asked for help from Merkez Efendi, the top doctor at the Sultan Mosque school. Merkez Efendi was not just any doctor; he knew a lot about plants and how they could be used as medicine. He worked really hard, mixing 41 different plants and spices together to make a special paste. This paste, called mesir macunu, was thought to have strong healing powers.

Luckily, Hafsa Sultan got all better after eating the mesir macunu. Sultan Suleiman was so happy about his mom’s health that he didn’t want to keep this amazing paste a secret. He told everyone about the recipe for mesir macunu, so they could also use it and maybe feel better too.
