When is National Pizza Day?
Mark your calendars! Every year on February 9th, the world unites to celebrate a food that brings people together – pizza!
How Did National Pizza Day Start?
A long time ago, people around the Mediterranean Sea made flatbreads with things like oil, herbs, and cheese on top. But the kind of pizza we eat now started in Naples, Italy. When tomatoes came to Europe from the Americas in the 10th century, people in Naples started putting them on their flatbreads, and that’s how our pizza was born.
Pizza became famous all over Italy and then in other countries in Europe. It came to the United States in the late 1800s with Italians who moved to New York City. The first known pizza shop in the U.S., Lombardi’s, opened in 1905 and is still making pizzas today.
